After the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when a woman asked Benjamin Franklin what sort of government the Constitution would provide, he reportedly answered, “A Republic, Madame, if you can keep it.”
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” Ronald Reagan
Responsible citizens are proactive investing the time needed to learn and support our republic. Informed citizens are able to recognize the truth when they hear it and to reject deceit. Such citizens are needed, as the founding principles of our country are no longer assured.
A sense of service is crucial to a society that appreciates and maintains the values our country was founded on, such as respect, discipline, responsibility, hard work, honesty, a moral code, and shared American values.
Past generations understood that the blessings of their society were built by such values, and that these values must be passed on to the younger generation in order to preserve our constitutional republic and way of life.
Read, reflect, and think for yourself with a broader view of U.S. and world history. There will always be bad actors who will seek to enrich themselves at the expense of society. Just look at the lies and violence that brought the world totalitarianism in all its forms: communism, fascism, Nazism, and socialism. All have been disastrous to every society that they dominated.
